Route Planning

Route Planning

Truck Me calculates routes that only use roads approved for your vehicle type by the NHVR. Every route respects your vehicle's network restrictions, weight limits, and dimensional constraints.

Planning a Route

  1. Open the route planner, tap the search bar on the home screen or the route icon in the bottom nav.
  2. Set origin and destination, your current location is used as default origin. Tap to change it.
  3. Add stops, tap "Add Stop" to create multi-stop routes. Drag to reorder.
  4. Select your vehicle, if you have multiple vehicle profiles, pick the one you're driving.
  5. Calculate, Truck Me queries the NHVR Routing Service for your approved route.

Network Overlay

The map uses a colour-coded overlay to show road access status:

ColourStatusMeaning
GreenApprovedRoad is approved for your vehicle type
AmberConditionalRoad has restrictions (time, weight, escort)
RedRestrictedRoad is not approved for your vehicle

Tap any road segment to open the Segment Inspector and see the specific conditions that apply.

Dual-Route Comparison

Truck Me's Route Intelligence feature compares two routes side by side:

  • NHVR-approved route, the compliant route using only approved roads.
  • Unrestricted route, what a general mapping app would suggest (ignoring heavy vehicle restrictions).

This shows you when the approved route adds significant distance or time. You'll see the difference in kilometres and estimated travel time, helping you plan better and understand network constraints.

Alternative Routes

When available, Truck Me offers multiple approved route options:

  • Fastest, least estimated travel time on approved roads.
  • Shortest, least distance on approved roads.
  • Community preferred, routes with the best driver-reported quality ratings.

Route Conditions

Some road segments have conditions attached. Truck Me displays these clearly:

  • Time restrictions, certain roads only allow heavy vehicles during specific hours.
  • Weight limits, bridges and road segments with maximum gross mass.
  • Escort requirements, over-dimensional loads requiring pilot vehicles.
  • Bridge clearance, height-restricted bridges and overpasses.

All conditions are sourced directly from the NHVR network data and kept up to date.

Saving Routes

Save frequently used routes for quick access. Truck Me monitors saved routes for network changes and alerts you when a road on your route changes access status. See Settings for notification preferences.
