Truck Offline Maps Australia

Offline Maps for Trucks, Including NHVR Network Overlay

Download state or regional maps before you leave. Route calculation and the NHVR network overlay work without a mobile signal, so you are not stranded without navigation on an outback run through WA, NT, or western QLD.

Why offline maps matter for heavy vehicle drivers

Long haul freight in Australia regularly passes through areas with no mobile coverage at all. The Nullarbor Plain, the Barkly Highway, the Gibb River Road, and most freight routes through outback QLD and SA have extended sections where 4G and even 3G signal is unavailable. A navigation app that relies on a live data connection fails completely in these conditions.

For truck drivers this is a different problem to car drivers. Car navigation apps have had offline map options for years, but they do not include heavy vehicle-specific data. Downloading an offline map from a consumer app gives you road geometry but no NHVR access codes. You can see the roads but you cannot tell which ones are approved for your vehicle class without a connection.

Fleet operators running vehicles in remote WA, NT, and QLD also face data cost considerations. Streaming map tiles and network data over a satellite or remote mobile connection is expensive. Pre-downloading regions on Wi-Fi before a run eliminates that data usage while the vehicle is in transit.

How Truck Me offline maps work

In the offline maps screen, you select the region you want to download. Truck Me shows you the download size before you confirm. Tap download and the map tiles, road network data, and NHVR network overlay for your vehicle class are all saved to your device. Download over Wi-Fi before you leave to avoid using mobile data.

Once downloaded, the map works the same as the live map. You see the same colour-coded road overlay. You can plan routes and Truck Me will calculate an NHVR-approved route using the downloaded network data. Turn-by-turn navigation works from your device's GPS, which does not require a data connection.

Multiple regions can be downloaded at once. If your run crosses state borders, download both regions before you leave. When you return to mobile coverage, Truck Me automatically checks for updates to the downloaded regions and refreshes them in the background.

What works offline, and what needs a connection

Offline maps cover the core navigation use case. Some features that rely on live community data require a connection.

Works offline

  • +Turn-by-turn navigation (uses device GPS)
  • +NHVR network overlay (downloaded with map)
  • +Route calculation for your vehicle class
  • +Fixed speed camera alert locations
  • +Bridge height restriction overlay
  • +Driver logbook recording
  • +Saved route display

Requires connection

  • ~Community incident reports (live crowd-sourced)
  • ~Mobile speed camera alerts (live community data)
  • ~Fuel prices along route (state government APIs)
  • ~Network data updates from NHVR
  • ~Saved route network change alerts
  • ~Map region updates

Offline map features

Offline maps in Truck Me are built for long haul freight operators, not as a consumer convenience feature.

Download by state or region

Download map tiles for an entire state or a specific region before you leave. Select the area from the offline maps screen, confirm the download size, and the map is available without a data connection.

NHVR overlay included

The NHVR network access overlay is bundled with the offline map download. Green, amber, and red road colouring for your vehicle class is visible on the downloaded map without needing a data connection.

Offline route calculation

Route calculation works offline using the downloaded map data and NHVR network. Enter an origin and destination and Truck Me calculates an approved route for your vehicle class without any mobile signal.

Automatic sync when connected

When you return to coverage, Truck Me checks for map updates and network changes. Downloaded regions are refreshed in the background so the next offline run uses current data.

Storage management

See the file size of each downloaded region before you download. Delete regions you no longer need to free space. Maps are compressed, so a full state download is manageable on a modern device.

Designed for outback freight runs

Long haul routes in WA, NT, QLD, and SA regularly pass through hundreds of kilometres with no mobile coverage. Truck Me offline maps are built for these conditions, not as an afterthought for urban users.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much storage does an offline state map take?

Storage requirements vary by state size and road density. A region like metropolitan Sydney or Melbourne with dense road networks takes more space per square kilometre than a remote outback region. Indicative sizes: a major metro region is typically 500 MB to 1.5 GB. A full state like WA or QLD is larger. Truck Me shows the exact download size before you confirm so you can manage your storage accordingly.

Can I still get NHVR-approved routes when offline?

Yes. When you download a region, the NHVR network data for that region is included in the download. Route calculation uses the downloaded network data to plan a route that stays on the approved network for your vehicle class. The result is the same as an online route calculation, using the network data as it was at the time of your last download.

Do offline maps include the network overlay colouring?

Yes. The green, amber, and red road colouring that reflects NHVR access codes for your vehicle class is included in the offline download. You can see which roads are approved, conditional, or restricted while driving without a data connection.

What features require a data connection even with offline maps?

Community incident reports require a data connection because they are live crowd-sourced data. Live speed camera alerts for mobile cameras also require a connection. Fixed speed camera locations are included in the offline download. The logbook and routing features work fully offline.

How do I know when my offline maps are out of date?

Truck Me shows the last updated date for each downloaded region in the offline maps screen. When connected, the app checks for updates and notifies you if a newer version of the network data is available. For outback runs where NHVR network changes are infrequent, downloaded maps remain accurate for extended periods.

Can I use offline maps to save on roaming costs?

Yes. Downloading maps on Wi-Fi before departure avoids streaming map data over a mobile connection while driving. For fleet operators in areas with poor coverage or high data roaming costs, pre-downloading regions for planned routes is a practical cost reduction measure.
