Truck Me vs Truckwiz: What We Do Different

4 min readTruck Me Team

The Current State of Heavy Vehicle Routing

Truckwiz is the most well-known heavy vehicle routing app in Australia. It has over 10,000 downloads on Google Play. It also has a 2.8-star rating and reviews that use the word "scam" more than once.

We analysed 222 Google Play reviews to understand exactly where Truckwiz falls short. Here's what drivers are saying, and what we're building instead.

The Top 10 Truckwiz Complaints

1. Payment and Login Are Broken

The number one complaint. Drivers pay $15/month but can't access maps. Subscriptions charge but the app won't log in. Multiple reviewers call it a scam.

Truck Me: Clean Stripe integration. Free tier with full core routing. Transparent pricing. 14-day Pro trial so you can test before you pay.

2. Crashes, Freezing, and Overheating

Phones overheat within five minutes of use. The app crashes mid-navigation. Built on React Native with heavy map rendering, the JavaScript bridge can't keep up.

Truck Me: Built in Flutter with native compilation. No JS bridge. Mapbox GL for hardware-accelerated rendering. We've designed for the long haul, not just the demo.

3. Routes on Wrong Roads

Drivers report being sent down 3-tonne roads in a 22-tonne truck. Incorrect axle count options. Routes that ignore the vehicle type entirely.

Truck Me: Direct NHVR data integration. Every route is calculated against your specific vehicle combination type. Per-segment access codes ensure you only travel approved roads.

4. Bridge Warnings Come Too Late

Truckwiz warns about low bridges after you've already committed to the road. By the time you hear the alert, there's nowhere to turn.

Truck Me: Two-stage bridge height warnings. Stage 1 alerts you at the turn before the restricted road. Stage 2 warns again at 500m approach. If your vehicle height exceeds the clearance, you get a red alert with enough room to stop or turn.

5. Can't Save Individual Addresses

Users can only save multi-stop routes, not individual locations. Basic functionality that's missing.

Truck Me: Save locations, save routes, save vehicle profiles. Quick-switch between vehicles recalculates the entire overlay.

6. Loses State When Backgrounded

Switch to a phone call, the route disappears. Minimise the app to check a message, start over.

Truck Me: Full background GPS and route state persistence. Your route survives calls, app switches, and even restarts.

7. Routes Change Without Warning

Destinations randomly swap during navigation. The route recalculates without the driver asking.

Truck Me: Route changes only happen on explicit user action or significant deviation from the planned path. You stay in control.

8. Navigation Volume Too Quiet

Voice navigation is inaudible over truck engine and road noise.

Truck Me: Independent volume controls with loud defaults. Master toggle, per-category toggles (navigation, bridge warnings, speed alerts), and a volume slider designed for cab noise.

9. No Free Trial or Transparent Pricing

Drivers feel tricked into subscriptions. No way to test before committing.

Truck Me: Free tier includes core routing and network overlay. Pro adds route intelligence, offline maps, and incident reporting. Fleet pricing scales per driver. All pricing is visible before signup.

10. Support Doesn't Respond

The support email reportedly has a typo in it. Multiple reviews mention zero response to complaints.

Truck Me: Working support with under 24-hour response time. We're building for an industry that depends on reliability, that includes our support.

What No Competitor Does

Truck Me combines three capabilities that no other app in Australia offers together:

  1. NHVR-direct routing, per-segment access codes, not approximations
  2. Community incident reporting, real-time road events from drivers, replacing scattered Facebook posts
  3. Route intelligence, dual-route comparison showing when the approved route differs from the fastest, so you can make informed decisions

That's our moat. NHVR data gives you the legal route. Community reports give you the live picture. Route intelligence shows you the trade-offs.
